Bellingham tree work is mostly tall trees in tight spaces: big conifers on hillside lots, mature street-side maples, and wooded parcels around Lake Whatcom. Call (360) 503-0571 for a free estimate.
Trees we see in Bellingham
Douglas-fir and western red cedar tower over many older neighborhoods, with bigleaf maple, red alder and birch filling in. Around Lake Whatcom and Chuckanut, mature second-growth forest runs right up to the houses.
Terrain and access
Hillside lots and infill properties with fence-line-only access mean many removals are done in pieces, with rigging, instead of dropping the whole tree. Clay-heavy soils hold water, so saturated ground in winter adds to uprooting risk.
Wind, snow and storms
Bellingham gets both kinds of winter wind: southerly storms off the water, and cold northeast Fraser River outflow winds that often bring freezing rain and ice. Ice-loaded limbs and wind from an unusual direction are a bad combination for trees.

Permits and regulated trees
Trees in critical areas (steep slopes, wetlands, streams) are regulated by the City of Bellingham, and properties in the Lake Whatcom watershed have extra rules on clearing and vegetation because the lake supplies the city’s drinking water. Outside city limits that’s Whatcom County Planning & Development Services. We’ll flag any tree that looks regulated before work starts.
Frequently asked questions
Do I need a permit to remove a tree in Bellingham?
It depends on where the tree is. Trees in critical areas, shoreline areas, or the Lake Whatcom watershed often need review, while many ordinary yard trees don’t. We’ll tell you what we see, and you or we can confirm with the city or county.
Can you remove a tree with no truck access to the backyard?
Usually, yes. We take it down in sections, lower pieces with rigging and carry or haul debris out through the access you have. Tight access affects time and price, so we’ll account for it in the estimate.
Why are ice storms so hard on Bellingham trees?
Fraser River outflow events bring cold northeast wind, often with freezing rain. Ice adds a lot of weight to limbs, and wind from the north hits trees that grew up braced against southerly storms. Broken tops and split limbs are common afterward.
